MCLE training program: “Serving Those Who Have Served: Legal Representation for Veterans”
Tuesday, January 24, 2012
This day-long program will prepare attorneys with invaluable insight into the culture of veterans-from their military experience, to physical and psychological issues faced by veterans, including post-traumatic stress, traumatic brain injury and homelessness. If you already have a Veterans’ rights project or are thinking about establishing such a project you should definitely attend this CLE.
For more information on the training you may visit our website at www.nysba.org/veterans2012 . Attached is the registration form for the program. Because of NYSBA’s commitment to ensure that there are sufficient attorneys available to meet the civil legal needs of veterans, the Association will waive the Annual Meeting registration fee of $85 for persons registering to attend only the Veterans CLE and who agree to accept a veteran case referral from an organized legal services organization or bar association program.
Registration for Conference of Bar Leaders events at the NYSBA’s 2012 Annual Meeting closes this Friday, January 13. If you plan to attend, please make sure you have registered with Linda Schupp (518.487.5541 | This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. Screening of Nuremberg: Its Lesson for Today
Wednesday, January 25, 2012
Join us for a special event of historic significance, a screening of Nuremberg: Its Lesson for Today [The Schulberg/Waletzky Restoration], a documentary depicting the most famous courtroom drama in modern times, and the first to make extensive use of film as evidence. The film will be presented by restoration producer Sandra Schulberg, along with a panel of attorneys and history experts who will discuss the significance of the trial, the role of film evidence and the impact of the “Nuremberg Principles” on the area of international criminal justice. A victim of the Cold War, the film was suppressed for many years. A detailed description of the program, including CLE credit provided for attendees, is attached.

NYSBA: Court Simplification
Friday, January 27, 2012
You are invited to attend a meeting on proposals to simplify the New York State court system on Friday, January 27 from 2:00 – 3:30 p.m. at the Hilton New York Hotel (1335 Avenue of the Americas between 53rd and 54th streets), Sutton Parlor Center, 2nd floor. Refreshments will be served. (This is held during the NYSBA Annual Meeting in NYC.)
As practitioners, you are aware that describing the New York State court system to others demonstrates it is unduly complex and difficult to understand, especially outside of your specialty area. Even experienced attorneys must consult endlessly to understand the different rules and procedures of the different courts. A 21st century structure that is less cumbersome for attorneys and litigants (especially unrepresented litigants) to navigate is urgently needed. Given the difficulties in the economy, the limitations on the state budget, and the interest of the Governor and business in government efficiency, the Coalition for Court Simplification believes the ability to move forward on this long-needed reform is very likely.
The New York State Bar Association has made advancing court simplification initiatives one of its legislative priorities for this year.
Please join us, especially those who will be in NYC to attend the NYSBA’s Annual Meeting, along with the NYC-based attendees.
